The Broncos are in talks to get disgruntled 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick to re-work his deal.

Colin Kaepernick may soon be competing with Mark Sanchez to be Peyton Manning’s successor with the Broncos.

The Broncos and 49ers have reached an agreement on the parameters of a potential trade that would send the disgruntled quarterback from San Francisco to Denver, according to ESPN, though Kaepernick still needs to agree to a restructured contract to complete the deal. If an agreement on a reworked deal is reached, the Broncos are expected to send a mid-round pick to the 49ers, according to ESPN.

That conversation could be well underway, as Kaepernick apparently met in person with John Elway at the GM’s home in Colorado on Thursday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The paper also reported it was at least the second such meeting between the Broncos GM and the 49ers quarterback this offseason. In order for those two to meet, the 49ers presumably must have granted permission for the Broncos to speak to their player.

Kaepernick’s $ 11.9 million salary recently became guaranteed, and that apparently is more than the Broncos would like to spend on him. At the moment, the Broncos have just $ 1.62 million in cap room, per NFLPA records. However, if they trade or cut tackle Ryan Clady, the Broncos would save $ 8.9 million against the salary cap, per overthecap.com.

If Kaepernick is, indeed traded to Denver, that would eliminate another possible backup plan for the Jets at quarterback. Gang Green was among the teams linked to Kaepernick, and back in February the Daily News reported that Kaepernick wanted out of San Francisco and that the Jets were his preferred destination.

Gang Green’s first choice at quarterback is to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, though they have yet to reach an agreement with the veteran QB. The trade would also fully close off the possibility of Fitzpatrick heading to Denver, though that always appeared unlikely once Sanchez signed there.
