Elon Musk Has Sold More Than $3.5 Million Worth of Flamethrowers

Entrepreneur Elon Musk is primarily known for founding the private spaceflight firm SpaceX and electric car maker Tesla, but he has a few other business ventures. One of them is The Boring Company, which was started ostensibly to develop the necessary technology to drill tunnels for Hyperloop-style transit systems. The company is anything but “boring” now that it’ll sell you a flamethrower. It’s apparently sold a lot of them, too.

While The Boring Company is mainly a geotechnical engineering firm, Musk has been getting the (intentionally cheeky) name out there by sharing neat concept videos and selling hats. Yes, before the flamethrower, The Boring Company sold about 50,000 hats for $ 20 each. Musk could have sold more, but the company capped sales of the hat. This has resulted in aftermarket prices well over $ 100… for a hat.

The follow-up to the hat, again, has nothing to do with geotechnical engineering. The Boring Company flamethrower can be yours for the low price of $ 500. Sure, $ 500 is a lot for what’s essentially a dangerous toy, but where else are you going to get a flamethrower that cheap?

The flamethrower was launched on the company’s website on Friday and had sold 7,000 units by Sunday. That means The Boring Company has moved more than $ 3.5 million worth of flamethrowers. The purchase page also offers the opportunity to add a fire extinguisher to your order for $ 30, which is very thoughtful and probably a good idea. The Boring Company admits this is overpriced, but it comes with a cool sticker and “the button is conveniently riiight above.”

The flamethrowers are limited to 20,000 units, but they won’t ship until the spring. Should you order one of these devices, you most likely will not be committing a crime. In the US, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms allows civilians to own flamethrowers as long as the flame is less than 10 feet long. The Boring Company’s unit is certainly on the right side of that. For those outside the US, it’s a good idea to check local regulations before importing a flamethrower.

What happens if the flamethrower sells out? Maybe Musk will come up with an even more absurd novelty item to sell under The Boring Company name. Maybe Elon Musk could become the man who finally made the Warhammer 40k Chainsword a reality. If you want your very own Boring Company flamethrower, you might want to hurry before they only exist on eBay for double the price.
