Pizza Hut launches pizza with hot dog crust

Call it edible patriotism.

Two of America’s iconic foods are now one big meal thanks to Pizza Hut’s new Hot Dog Bites Pizza, a one-topping pie boasting two-dozen mini-hot-dogs baked into the crust.

It may be the only pizza in the world that comes with a side of French’s mustard. But of course — how else are you going to eat your pigs in a blanket?

The limited-edition $ 11.99 pie hits Pizza Hut restaurants on Thursday — but the Daily News Taste Kitchen got a taste on Monday. Reviews were mixed, but most testers admired Pizza Hut’s ultimate American lovechild.

“This pie tastes like it was made by Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty,” said one tester, admiring the cheese-to-frank ratio.

For other News reporters, it was not exactly love at first bite.

“It tastes like a bar mitzvah cocktail hour and a frat party collided,” said one tester. “But unlike the famous Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup ad, these are not two great tastes that go great together.”

Another hater tried to focus on the positive — but in doing so revealed only the negative: “The only thing that wouldn’t make me sick is the mustard,” she said.

The new hybrid pie certainly eliminates the arduous decision making process of choosing between pizza or hot dogs. But eating this culinary enigma raises some issues: Do you eat the pizza and the hot dogs together?

“It’s intended to be eaten separately,” says Pizza Hut spokesman Doug Terfehr, going on to praise the innovation. “People like awesome indulgent foods … This is a mash up of two all-American meals in one.”

It’s the biggest innovation since mozzarella “Stuffed Crust” flooded college dorm rooms in 1995 so it was no surprise when eaters set social media abuzz when the latest pie broke the internet.

“If I want pigs in a blanket, I eat pigs in a blanket. If I want pizza, I eat pizza,” Autumn Fontenot wrote on Pizza Hut’s Facebook page. “Never in my life have I wanted them together.”

But others saw the Hot Dog Bites Pizza as a bold Declaration of (Co)-Dependence.

“It is my duty as an American to eat this pizza,” commented Arianna Story.

The original version of this hybrid pie launched in the UK, Thailand, Australia, Canada and the Middle East three years ago, but contained full-sized hot dogs baked inside the outer crust. The slightly modified mini-frank version will be sold at the pizza chain’s 6,300 U.S. restaurants.

Pizza Hut isn’t the first chain to get on the Frankenfood bandwagon. Last year, Taco Bell created a Waffle Taco  a waffle stuffed with sausage, egg and cheese. And last month, Olive Garden released its Breadstick Sandwich with meatballs and chicken parmigiana. (FYI, it comes with breadsticks.)

The mash-up food trend must be working. Dunkin Donuts made its Croissant Donut  which was supposed to be a limited time offer last year  a permanent addition to its menu after selling like hotcakes. The coffee chain has plans to hawk a filled variety and has experimented with bacon-topped doughnuts.
