The era of foldable phones is upon us whether you like it or not. Both Samsung and Huawei have shown off some upcoming foldable devices, but they won’t be cheap. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold will cost almost $ 2,000, and the Huawei Mate X is well over $ 2,000. If you spend that kind of money on a phone, you probably want it to be durable for the long-haul. Samsung is seeking to assuage any fears about the folding mechanism in the Galaxy Fold with a 34-second video of the phone folding again and again.

The Galaxy Fold will have some things in common with the new Galaxy S10.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce It’ll run on the Snapdragon 855 with up to 12GB of RAM and sport Samsung’s latest OLED panel technology. That panel won’t be stuck behind an inflexible glass panel, though. Well, the outside OLED will be. The inner 7.3-inch OLED will fold down the middle to pack a tablet-size screen in a pocketable device.

Most phones in recent years have all been “candy bar” form factors with no moving parts. Consumers gravitated toward those designs because they’re thinner, lighter, and less likely to break. That last factor is important when you’re talking about a $ 2,000 phone. It would be a shame if you spent that kind of money and the hinge on your Galaxy Fold snapped after six months.

Samsung talked up the innovative gearing system in its Fold hinge during the announcement, but it was slow to provide details on how long it would last. Now, there’s a video of Samsung testing the hinge on the Galaxy Fold. You can watch as the phone folds and unfolds for 34 seconds.

Of course, a short YouTube video won’t provide all the information you want. So, Samsung offered some numbers as well. According to the company, the hinge on the Galaxy Fold is designed to last for 200,000 folds. If you opened the Fold 100 times a day, it would take you five years to reach that threshold. Although, that assumes you don’t do something like bend it too far or sit on it. A phone with a hinge will always be more fragile than one without.

Samsung expects to launch the Galaxy Fold in the coming months, but it doesn’t expect to sell many at $ 1,980. It has repeatedly referred to the Galaxy Fold as a “luxury device.” At least it will be a luxury device that won’t snap in half the first time you use it.
