New dating app 'Align' uses astrology to form connections

If you’re tired of swiping right and making no connections, you might want to turn to astrology.

Align, a new dating mobile app, is using astrological compatibility to help those looking for love find more meaningful connections.

Co-founders Aliza Kelly Faragher and Helen Grossman said they got the idea to create Align after being very dissatisfied with other dating apps and constantly trying to decipher what sign their dates were.

“We thought, ‘what if there was a way that before you event went on a date with a person that you were able to gauge how you’d get along?’ And that’s something that we wanted to explore a little more,” Faragher told the Daily News. “We also realized that everyone around is talking about astrology and that it was a huge cultural movement.”

The app requires users to log in with their Facebook account and input their birthday. Once account is created, Align asks for the user to pick 6 different traits-represented by emoji and words-that best describe them. For example, a Taurus would have the option between money emoji, a wine glass emoji, and other words such as passionate and realistic.

Once the traits have been chosen, and a profile photo has been uploaded, users will automatically receive five unique matches every day-there is no swiping on this platform. The matches will display each day in form a constellation on the app’s main screen. Most compatible matches will appear in bigger circles with different color auras representing their element sign: earth, fire, wind and water.

If two users “align” with each other-the equivalent of both swiping right-then they’ll be able to see each other’s full traits and message each other.

“What we’re doing is distilling that information [astrology] and simpling it down and speaking a language that we speak and our friends speak,” Grossman said.

In the future, Align plans to provide in-app purchases that give users a natal astrological chart read, horoscopes and even couple horoscopes.

Align is currently available for free on the iOS App Store and only works in three cities: Los Angeles and New York City. Eventually, Align will roll out in San Francisco and Austin.
