Study shows that people who live alone eat junk

An Australian study found that people who live alone eat less fresh food.

If you live alone, you probably eat like crap, according to a new study.

Researchers in Australia found that people in solitary existences tend to cook less and eat less fresh food.

“People who live alone have a lower diversity of food intake and a lower consumption of … fruits and vegetables and fish,” said Katherine Hanna, one of the co-authors of the Queensland University of Technology study.

Hanna said a number of factors — including loneliness — could be responsible.

“Economic factors also explain lower consumption of foods like fruits and vegetables and fish,” which are more expensive, she said.

Other possibilities include lack of motivation to cook and lack of encouragement to eat healthy.

“When I did cook for myself, it was pasta or soup, that’s it. Same thing all the time,” Chandra Bozelko, 43, told the Daily News, recalling her days living alone in the city.

She now lives in Connecticut with her parents and describes herself as “much healthier now.”

Not only is it cheaper to buy produce outside the city, but exhaustion from her busy city lifestyle also played a role in her eating habits.

“When I was really tired and walking home, I would pass many, many pizza places that sold slices that were ready to go,” she said.
